Creating a Sustainable Future for Textiles,

Together For People and Planet

About Us

GATS is an industry-led, not-for-profit Section 8 organization dedicated to advancing sustainability, circularity, and innovation in the Indian textile sector, with a strong focus on supporting MSMEs. Founded with the vision of transforming the industry, we empower small and medium enterprises to adopt sustainable practices, circular solutions, and cutting-edge technologies, enhancing their global competitiveness.

Our Vision

We envision a thriving, circular textile sector powered by sustainable practices and innovative solutions-a zero waste supply chain that minimizes environmental burden, creates dignified jobs, and raises life standards.

Our Mission

Promote Recycled Fibers as preferred raw materials

Develop economically viable waste collection models

Enable cost-neutral circularity

Create Dignified Jobs

The Problems we Address

1. Resource Scarcity and Environmental Degradation

The textiles industry relies on large amounts of raw materials, especially cotton and synthetic fibres. Cotton production alone consumes 2,700 Liters of water per T-shirt—placing immense strain on water resources, particularly in water-scarce regions. Additionally, synthetic fibres contribute to microplastic pollution, impacting marine biodiversity and human health.

2. Waste Impact on Ecosystems and Biodiversity

Textile waste in landfills releases greenhouse gases, leaches toxic chemicals, and often ends up in marine environments, harming biodiversity. Municipal solid waste systems are overwhelmed by textile waste, much of which is non-biodegradable, leading to pollution and loss of habitat.

3. Social and Economic Challenges:

Many textile workers face poor working conditions, limited wages, and few opportunities for skills development. MSMEs, which employ 70% of India’s textile workforce, often struggle with fragmented operations, outdated technology, and regulatory hurdles. Without cohesive support, these businesses lack the means to adopt circular practices and lose out on global competitiveness.

4.Product Developmemt

Product development at manufacturing level is not consumer & sustainability centric. Manufacturers don’t do developments until they have assurances & Brands don’t give assurance until they have something in hand.

Our Solutions: For People For Planet

Circular Economy Initiatives

GATS supports the integration of circular practices, such as recycling, upcycling, and reuse, within the textile supply chain. Recycling remains the top tool for achieving circularity, reducing raw material demand and minimizing waste impact. By promoting recycled fibers, we conserve natural resources, reduce pollution, and lessen the industry’s carbon footprint.A

Policy Advocacy and Industry Collaboration

GATS works with government bodies, including the Ministry of Textiles, to shape policies that support circularity, such as establishing HS codes for recycled fibers and advocating for textiles under Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) in India. We collaborate with brands, recyclers, and organizations to set circular standards and build an ecosystem that promotes sustainable growth.

Sustainable Textile Recovery Facilities (TRFs)

We have pioneered TRFs to divert textile waste from landfills and recycle it into new fibers, fabrics, and garments. Each day, GATS members collectively recycle over 500 tons of textile waste, significantly reducing the environmental burden. TRFs ensure that textile waste is systematically sorted, processed, and transformed into new materials, supporting a circular lifecycle.

Training and Capacity Building

To empower MSMEs, GATS offers workshops and training in circular practices, waste management, and sustainable production. Our partnership with academic institutions fosters knowledge-sharing, research, and skill-building, enabling small enterprises to adopt innovative solutions and maintain global competitiveness.

Unlike most alliances and councils in the textile sector, GATS is led by experienced industrialists—professionals who have been working in recycling, upcycling, and circularity for decades. I know one of the co-founders, Parvinder Singh, quite well. He brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the council. In the coming years, we can expect to hear many exciting updates from GATS.
